Human Rights House Zagreb is holding a one-day training to recognize and suppress hate speech!
Hate speech devalues and dehumanizes a person or group of people because of their diversity and causes alienation and social exclusion. Hate speech is not protected by the right to freedom of expression, but is its pure opposite and represents a violation of human rights and human dignity of LGBTIQ persons, members of the Roma and Serbian national minorities, migrants and refugees and other minority groups in Croatian society. Hate speech also weakens democracy and strengthens the positions of radicals, populists and eurosceptics.
How can young people oppose hate speech?
To find the answer, you are welcome to the education for youth “Youth against hate speech”! The education is intended for young people (16-30 years old) interested in understanding and combating hate speech. Participants do not need to have any prior knowledge. Methods of work are participatory and consist of group work, self-reflection, working on examples through workshops and teaching about hate speech and freedom of expression.
The aim of the training is to raise awareness of the impact of hate speech on democratic participation and European values. In a one-day workshop, participants will learn about what hate speech is and what impact it has on society. They will also be empowered with tools for conducting discussions among their colleagues and will receive a certificate of completed education.
